Dear Journal:
Well, yesterday I decided to go to the Tiber for a picnic. Loosen the nerves and relax. The Tiber probably was a poor location though. Smells like a sewer. Even Emperor Claudius had been unable to fix all of the sewage problems. Heck, most of Rome dumps their sewage in the river.
Well, anyway, there I was sitting on my blanket with good food and lots of sunlight. Relaxed and happy.
Like Hades I was.
Usually, at that time of day, the park is crowded with picnickers, lunchtime types, and people out to have fun. As I looked around, there was only one other person there. What looked like an old transient asleep against a tree. Funny thing about that. Sleeping in the park was not allowed, yet there he was, undisturbed.
Well, I went back to my lunch and was starting to unwind when I noticed the sun was being shadowed out. Looking up, I saw a nondescript citizen staring down at me.
“May I help you?” I asked.
Without saying a word, the fellow dropped a piece of parchment in my lap and walked off. I picked the parchment up and commenced to read. I dropped it twice before I could finish. I was being summoned before a Senate committee three days hence. Seems they had some questions to ask.
As I looked up from reading the summons, I was taken aback by another chilling sight. The old transient was on his feet and staring at me. Nothing else. Just staring. Then, without a word, he turned and walked away.
So much for the picnic. Quickly I gathered up my now ignored meal and my blanket, and headed for home. Wonder what the Senate wants with me? This is getting worse.
